The Daintree River cable ferry has operated as a vehicle barge since 1963, when it replaced a hand-cranked punt that carried Model T Fords and timber trucks across the river's tidal lower reach. The current ferry uses a cable-guided propulsion system anchored to both banks, allowing it to cross perpendicular to the current regardless of tide or flow. The crossing itself takes approximately five minutes from ramp to ramp, covering the 400-metre width of the river at its narrowest navigable point. Vehicles drive directly onto the steel deck—no crew boarding assistance required—and remain in their cars during transit. The ferry master monitors both approaches via radio and adjusts departure intervals based on queue length at either bank. During dry season weekends and school holiday periods, the service operates at near-continuous frequency, with crossings departing as soon as loading completes. The cable system compensates automatically, maintaining crossing times within a narrow window. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit the river year-round and are frequently visible from the ferry deck, particularly during early morning and late afternoon crossings when estuarine wildlife is most active along the mangrove-lined banks.
